Kirialax saga, a late medieval saga, most commonly defined as an Icelandic romance, which shares with other representatives of this genre the same themes, topics, motifs, structure and social concerns as well its readability, provides the scientists - in spite of its fragmentary nature - with a rich source of research opportunities. The author's straightforward and linguistically nimble narrative gradually proceeds in concentric circles from broader literary theoretical themes and topics to the core of this study: the discussion of the saga's 'learned and international' character which gives it a special position even within the cosmopolitan genre of Icelandic romances, notable for its heavy reliance on foreign literary influences and learned Latin material which reached them through Latin originals and their Old Icelandic translations and adaptations.
Apart from the saga's erudition, the book concentrates on the broader medieval context of Kirialax saga which is characterised by two notable features, the unmistakable influence of the native literary tradition of saga writing on the saga, and the touch of cosmopolitanism which links the saga thematically as well as geographically on one hand with southern and western Europe and on the other with the Mediterranean and wider non-European world.
